First day of summer...

It's the first day of summer vacation! Remember that feeling from when you were a kid?
Today is a little rainy, muggy, and overcast. Not much going on other than Azumanga Daioh (her) and coffee (me). And.. what's Ivy doing? At the moment, playing with blocks and chewing on his hands. Ah, the complicated life of a baby. He also enjoys a good game of "Up/Down." Which is, pull up on anything and everything, then let yourself fall down on your diaper-butt while shrieking, "Whoa!" Hours of entertainment.
Anyway, back to summer. Last year we were stuck inside for the bulk of it, with a newborn and no car. This year will be different - I want to get out there. I'm inspired by my brother's blog to get out and bike this year. I've lived here for almost 6 years, and still have never been to the Katy Trail. I'd like to plan a little trip. Need to enlist friends to go with.
Another main goal of the summer is to get Maxine swimming. At this point she doesn't know how, we just haven't been around pools that much. So my goal for summer is to seek them out. Try out all the area pools that don't require memberships (and bum guest passes of my friends that have them. )
Finally, we want to go camping at least a couple of times. And do summer reading book club at the library. And eat ice cream four to five times a week. Anyone have any other great ideas for us? What are your favorite summer memories?

I've been thinking a lot about this - it was a topic at church today too. Favorite summer memories:

- Finding the best rocks.
- spinning on the front lawn until I was so dizzy I fell down.
- catching fireflies (something my western kids never get to do).
- reading as much as I wanted. Every Carolyn Haywood book in the Holmdel library (and some from the neighboring libraries)!
- Vacations galore, because they were special.
- picking raspberries in the morning and collecting them in my out-stretched nightgown. The juice stains did come out.
- movies. They are more fun in the summer when you're a kid, and maybe when you're an adult too.

The bonus: Many of these things were free.

Blythe, I have raspberries growing in the back, and they spread like crazy. I can't tell you how exciting this is. (we didn't get fruit this year so hopefully next.) I think I'll also put in strawberries next year, can you say "recreate my childhood!"
We also have fireflies, too. I remember playing late into the evenings, at different summer social events. When Maxine was running around outside with the other kids at 11pm this weekend, I remembered that feeling.

two words:

porch culture.

i love summer porch culture... if you live someplace that is fortunate enough to have a porch. sitting on it, eating, listening to music, reading, watching people go by. one time we dragged a tv out onto the porch and watched kung fu movies and ate junk food. very fun.
