We can read.

Hey! All of a sudden, Maxine can read. It seemed to happen within the space of a week, everything just clicked. I think a combination of factors fell together, but we happened to have checked out The Electric Company DVD the previous 2 weeks, and I really think it helped to sink it in. There's all kinds of reading shows out there, but in my opinion, this one is still the best. Spiderman, Paul the Gorilla, the Short Circus, and a sexy young Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader! If you're a child of the 70's, you can relate, but even if you're not, check it out anyway. It's such a funny show.

Another reading resource we love is www.starfall.com. Xiney's been playing these "games" for a couple years. When we're reading together, sometimes I'll refer back to the little animations on here ("when two vowels go a-walkin, the first one does the talkin.")

What else? Well of course, we read together every night. As I write this she's working very hard on her book of Easter crossword puzzles (and debating with me vehemently about how "basket" must be spelled with an "i").
Those who have known us for awhile know that we fully intended on homeschooling before we fell into this school that we love. I do love her school and so does she. I don't post much about it in the interests of privacy, but if you ask I'll talk your ear off about it. But this whole reading thing kind of brings me back to homeschooling thoughts, because although her classroom has given her some good reinforcement, she's definately put it all together naturally, at home. I didn't even have to do anything special. So even though we're not the unschoolers we planned on being, my thoughts on how and why children learn are still the same.

Locavore follow-up

In case you were wondering how we're doing with all that, we've kind of fallen off the wagon. I mean, basically, we're still on winter meals, but the item in the photo (not the local honey on the right) snuck in there one weekend in January. Also bananas have made a guilty return. Maybe they're one of those items that can be forgiven as a basic necessity, like coffee or cumin.
One positive is that I've rejoined the city food co-op, which I found is a great local resouce for a good price. I am now hooked on the bacon we carry there. Maybe its not the healthiest thing to be hooked on bacon in your pregnancy, but if you tasted this bacon, you'd understand. It's the best ever. They also have local rice, flour, and beans, which is nice.
One switch we've made is from rice milk to fresh whole milk in glass jars. Divine.
So basically, thank the gods for meat, dairy, and whole grains in late winter/early spring. And fantasizing about June, when I'll be holding a new baby and eating strawberries by the ton.

Gearing Up for Baby - The Master List

So, I'm going to put this here, not as a call for stuff, but as a way to organize it for myself. Because I know I'll lose this scrap of paper that all this is written on. My plan is to take this list thrift shopping with me, so I don't get fixated on the fact that I need receiving blankets, and forget everything else.

co-sleeper - FOUND
stroller - FOUND thanks Jenny.
ergo - GIFTED, thanks Lash!

This pretty much sums up the way everyone around here feels right now. We've been in St. Louis 5 years this July, and this winter is the longest, coldest, and snowiest one we've had yet. Come on, spring!

Slumber Party

Holy crap. They are only six. How can they possibly stay up til 3 in the morning? I had to play "mean middle of the night mom" all night. I am so tired. Then again, its about time I get used to sleeping lighter in preparation for baby boy.
Well anyway, here are Maxine's best buddies from school, Miriam and Zoe, entranced by Sailor Moon after 4 hours of sleep.
